“Everybody should have a hobby of some sort.”

Matt BoringIn this episode, I interview Matt Boring (@TheBoringChef), a chef, professional gamer, and all-round Renaissance Man.

To be honest, I had tough time keeping up with all of Matt’s projects and interests. A lifelong learner, Matt had a successful career as an executive chef before getting a public relations degree and moving into social media for a living. He’s played video games professionally, learned piano, worked on houses, and more. His creative “bucket list” includes rebuilding a car, making his own knives, and creating art out of wooden blocks to resemble 8-bit pixelated images.

And if anyone I know is capable of doing all these things, it’s this guy. We had a great conversation about creativity and learning that everyone will love; no matter your interests.

During the interview, we discuss;

  • His path to becoming a Certified Executive Chef (CEC®), which led him to a degree in public relations, and into social media
  • His childhood and how video games were a part of his life at a young age
  • How cooking can be art, and what that means for chefs
  • His 9-year career as a chef before going back to school
  • How working as a creative can impact personal projects and your creative passions
  • The fact the transitioning from being a chef to working in the corporate world freed up a lot of time
  • How his love of video games even as an adult led to Matt becoming a professional gamer on platforms like Twitch, Kamcord, other live streaming sites
  • What it was like working professionally during the day, then playing video games online to over 2,000 followers every evening.
  • Matt’s recognition that being a professional gamer wasn’t a sustainable long-term career and how he used his sponsorship money
  • How Matt stopped playing video games and picked up woodworking as his new hobby
  • What’s it like being someone who embraces a new hobby every few years and goes into it full-force until they become proficient at it
  • His lifelong love of learning

  • How Matt juggles multiple hobbies with a full-time job and personal life
  • His definition of creative success

    This guy RULES – loved this one! “Building a car from scratch” – pretty cool to have on your bucket list! (Ok, ferret farm is as well 🙂 )
