“You have to make your art a priority.”

Rob MullerIn this episode, I interview Rob Müller (@RotoTok), a lifelong musician, professional drummer, and music producer who also happens to enjoy photography.

As someone who’s signed three record contracts, Rob and I had a great chat about the realities of “making it” when a band signs to a record label, why everyone needs to make time for their art and passions, and what it takes to raise and encourage creative kids. He’s a great guy, and it shows throughout our conversation. (By the way, sales from his album, Deep Blue Underneath, support a scholarship he founded for students at Indiana University.)

During this chat, we discuss;

  • His successful background as a musician, during which he signed three record contracts and ran his own label.
  • How he produced bands who had been signed to a label but weren’t ready for “prime time.”
  • How signing a record deal isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
  • How the evolution of technology has impacted his producing and efforts as a musician.
  • The types of musicians Rob works with today, in addition to his own music.
  • What’s it’s like working with his own daughter on her music
  • How he balances his music with parenting, a job, and other day-to-day responsibilities.
  • What he calls “creative constipation” and why it matters.
  • His advice for raising creative kids.
  • How everyone is creative in their own way.
  • How Rob found his creative voice over time and got into producing.
  • What Rob considers his greatest creative success.
  • His biggest lessons from working in the music industry.

In addition to Twitter, you can find Rob’s music on iTunes, as well as his website.
